We have a saying: good environmental performance makes good business
There are lots of ways we incorporate environmental best practice to contribute to our mission of running our business as sustainably as possible. Here are a few examples (and you can also read our environment policy statement):
Air & Water Quality
We exceed all the legal requirements for air and water quality.
We’re all about reducing air emissions and recycling water – for example, we filter and reuse rainwater in processes like making concrete and washing our lorries.
Carbon & Alternative Fuels
Our goal is to have 50% of our fuel come from sustainable sources (and ultimately we’d like it to be even higher).
At Breedon’s Hope Cement Works in the Peak District, we use waste-derived fuels (and raw materials) to make our cement. Sources include used tyres, processed sewage and domestic waste.
Nature Conservation & Biodiversity
Our quarries are part of beautiful landscapes and are home to all sorts of wildlife, and we make sure we protect and improve habitats while we work.
As we develop our quarries, we give back land to local flora and fauna by restoring surrounding areas and managing the soil. We work closely with our partners at organisations like wildlife trusts and English Nature.
Resources & Recycling
We use recycled and secondary materials wherever possible. This includes pulverised fuel ash from coal-fired power stations and ground granulated blast-furnace slag from steel production.
Rail Efficiency
Wherever possible, we transport by rail rather than road – in total Breedon Cement shifts approximately 1 million tonnes of cement by rail annually, including to our East London depot for our packed products.
Road Efficiency
When it comes to road haulage, we’re at the forefront of sustainability. This includes using technology like telematics and investing in trucks that are ever more efficient.
